On July 4,, during the course of the American Revolutionary War, the war ended in with recognition of the independence of the United States by Great Britain, representing the first successful war of independence against a European power. The current constitution was adopted in , after the Articles of Confederation, the first ten amendments, collectively named the Bill of Rights, were ratified in and designed to guarantee many fundamental civil liberties. During the second half of the 19th century, the American Civil War led to the end of slavery in the country.
By the end of century, the United States extended into the Pacific Ocean. The end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in left the United States as the sole superpower. It ranks highly in several measures of performance, including average wage, human development, per capita GDP. The origins of the term are found in Ancient Greece, in the Athenian democracy, the public opinion of voters was influenced by the political satire performed by the comic poets at the theaters.
The theatrical genre of Greek comedy can be described as a performance which pits two groups or societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Northrop Frye depicted these two opposing sides as a Society of Youth and a Society of the Old, a revised view characterizes the essential agon of comedy as a struggle between a relatively powerless youth and the societal conventions that pose obstacles to his hopes. Satire and political satire use comedy to portray persons or social institutions as ridiculous or corrupt, parody subverts popular genres and forms, critiquing those forms without necessarily condemning them.
Similarly scatological humour, sexual humour, and race humour create comedy by violating social conventions or taboos in comic ways, a comedy of manners typically takes as its subject a particular part of society and uses humor to parody or satirize the behaviour and mannerisms of its members.
Romantic comedy is a genre that depicts burgeoning romance in humorous terms. The adjective comic, which means that which relates to comedy is, in modern usage. Of this, the word came into usage through the Latin comoedia and Italian commedia and has, over time. The Greeks and Romans confined their use of the comedy to descriptions of stage-plays with happy endings. Aristotle defined comedy as an imitation of men worse than the average, however, the characters portrayed in comedies were not worse than average in every way, only insofar as they are Ridiculous, which is a species of the Ugly.
The Ridiculous may be defined as a mistake or deformity not productive of pain or harm to others, the mask, for instance, in the Middle Ages, the term expanded to include narrative poems with happy endings. It is in this sense that Dante used the term in the title of his poem, as time progressed, the word came more and more to be associated with any sort of performance intended to cause laughter.
During the Middle Ages, the comedy became synonymous with satire. They disassociated comedy from Greek dramatic representation and instead identified it with Arabic poetic themes and forms and they viewed comedy as simply the art of reprehension, and made no reference to light and cheerful events, or to the troubling beginnings and happy endings associated with classical Greek comedy. After the Latin translations of the 12th century, the term gained a more general meaning in medieval literature.
Starting from BCE, Aristophanes, a playwright and satirical author of the Ancient Greek Theater wrote 40 comedies,11 of which survive. Aristophanes developed his type of comedy from the satyr plays.
It was embodied most strongly in the arts, music, and literature, but had a major impact on historiography, education. It elevated folk art and ancient custom to something noble, Romanticism assigned a high value to the achievements of heroic individualists and artists, whose examples, it maintained, would raise the quality of society.
It also promoted the individual imagination as a critical authority allowed of freedom from classical notions of form in art, there was a strong recourse to historical and natural inevitability, a Zeitgeist, in the representation of its ideas.
In the second half of the 19th century, Realism was offered as a polar opposite to Romanticism, the decline of Romanticism during this time was associated with multiple processes, including social and political changes and the spread of nationalism. Defining the nature of Romanticism may be approached from the point of the primary importance of the free expression of the feelings of the artist.
The importance the Romantics placed on emotion is summed up in the remark of the German painter Caspar David Friedrich that the feeling is his law. Samuel Taylor Coleridge and others believed there were laws that the imagination—at least of a good creative artist—would unconsciously follow through artistic inspiration if left alone.
As well as rules, the influence of models from other works was considered to impede the creators own imagination, so that originality was essential. The concept of the genius, or artist who was able to produce his own work through this process of creation from nothingness, is key to Romanticism. This idea is called romantic originality. Not essential to Romanticism, but so widespread as to be normative, was a strong belief, however, this is particularly in the effect of nature upon the artist when he is surrounded by it, preferably alone.
Romantic art addressed its audiences with what was intended to be felt as the voice of the artist. So, in literature, much of romantic poetry invited the reader to identify the protagonists with the poets themselves.
In both French and German the closeness of the adjective to roman, meaning the new literary form of the novel, had some effect on the sense of the word in those languages. It is only from the s that Romanticism certainly knew itself by its name, the period typically called Romantic varies greatly between different countries and different artistic media or areas of thought.
Margaret Drabble described it in literature as taking place roughly between and , and few dates much earlier than will be found. In English literature, M. Abrams placed it between , or , this latter a very typical view, and about , however, in most fields the Romantic Period is said to be over by about , or earlier. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and it is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend and it is considered the unofficial end of summer.
The holiday is also a federal holiday, beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. Labor Day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, in , Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday.
By the time it became a federal holiday in Canadas Labour Day is also celebrated on the first Monday of September, more than 80 countries celebrate International Workers Day on May 1 — the ancient European holiday of May Day — and several countries have chosen their own dates for Labour Day. Beginning in the late 19th century, as the union and labor movements grew. My main interest is to work in a small-medium innovative technology company, or start something of my own.
I served 3 years in the Intelligence "chaman talpiot". However, I work only 2 years as full time engineer Intel Design Center I was working here part time as a student, but I think it doesn't count. How would you estimate my chances to get accepted?
From an extra-curricular point of view i don't have an impressive record. DO you think this year will be as easy as last year in terms of addmition chances - how do you explain the increase in Israelis addmitted abroad.
See the following article in the marker http: My estimate is that the admission chances for Israelis this year are similar to last year's. The overall number of applicants at the top schools both Israelis and not Israelis is likely, as far as I hear, to stay at about the same levels as last year. The Israelis still enjoy the decrease in the number of US applicants as well as have better applications now than they had in the 90's and early 's.
By the way, based on the information I have, less than 12 Israelis will start at Wharton this year. At Harvard, on the other hand, 5 ex-aringo folks are starting, so the number mentioned 4 is probably skewed down a bit. What is your take on R1 s. In most cases, applying in the first round is better for admission chances. If you want to pursue an ideal admission process for , take your first GMAT on or before April Prepare 4 quality applications for the first round.
It's an excellent school and an amazing finanical opportunity for Israelis. My first disclaimer is that it's all my personal believes though based on some research I made prior and during school. In general, I believe that every applicant should view the application as a marketing project, rather than an exam. There're no right answers and in the end of the day a bunch of officers, some even without an MBA, will make the final decision, and they make many mistakes.
On the other hand, they didn't make this mistake with George W. If there's one criterion to success is the ambition to succeeded in it. The more you research and work on the application the chances are that it'd be better accepted.
How early before I intend to start learning abroad should I start the process? I started months before the date of application and decided to force myself to apply for my three favorite programs HBS, Stanford and Wharton in the first round no matter what happened maybe this is the best recommendation I can give you — first round has more chances than the other two!!!
You can also do a great application in 2 or 3 months. The GMAT is the most time consuming. How important is the GMAT? What does it mean? That in the eyes of the school. GMAT is only in indicator and not the most important one. How important is it to graduate with honors? Does this mean that you'd work your ass on getting an honor? I never got honors and made it to a few programs. Should I ask for recommendations from my professors? The issue of recommenders could be easily described as an optimization of the following factors sorry for the mathematical description but it's really the best way: Your strategy — what is the "story" you market to the admission board — what makes you unique in comparison to all the other applicants from Israel.
Based on this, you should decide on the people who recommend you i. Your broad horizons — reference can be used exactly to show how "interesting" you are, to show activities that weren't the core of your life but add a flavor to your main story 3. Intimacy — schools are looking for someone who really knows you and can write a very detailed reference about who you are, what do you want to do, etc. Calibration and standardization — the school would try to understand how good are you in your peer or age group and the better you can convey it with your reference the better it is.
I mean that the recommender should be one that can say that you were THE best of the people under him, so it's better that he's not your direct boss with only two employees. This also shad some light on issue of the brand of the recommender.
If a random guy will say that you're one of the best that he met in his life, it won't have the same validity if the CEO will say it. What are the chances to get a scholarship and what does it requires from me to get one?
There're pretty good chances to get a scholarship when you are excepted to the best schools — the private schools in the US have A LOT of money and there perception is that poor student is more important than highly academic one, so they give money on need base. How old are most of the people who learn with you? I believe that the average age in my class at HBS was 27, and the range was between 22 as starting age and 36 an American army guy. How were most of the people you studied with?
But this is really a silly answer from my part. The class at HBS has people. That's huge, and also the most important advantage of school — it creates a large network, but still very cohesive one. First the class is divide to 10 section with 90 people in each, with whom you study all through the first year.
The outcome is that you know those 89 students pretty well, and on top of that with students, there's a good chance you'll be able to find people similar to you with the same interests, even if they're as obscure as accounting practices in the 17th century.
Do you think it's important to first finish my internship and than apply? It can't hurt, but my answer is NO. You'd be competing with other people who did the internship themselves so finishing it for itself won't be an advantage. Well, I highly recommend the HBS experience to everyone but especially to people who're open to new cultures and are happy with socializing.
It's expensive but I wouldn't include it as an issue if you're younger than 30 and with no more than one child. I believe it's important not to be locked on one specific school, apply to a few that you'd really consider attending and than take the best choice of the ones you were offered admission.
As an Israeli, you'd always remember than you're still at least years older than most US students so apply as soon as you can. Does your work experience have any impact on finding a job afterwards - in other words - if I dont have any notable work eperinece by that i mean outside the army and temp jobs will that hinder my chances to find a good job afterwards?
What should she choose? HBS offers six options: If she has no information whatsoever, she should choose "no information". If she has some information that enables her to rank you high and it doesn't strike the reader as "how the hell could she have information about this" then it would help if she ranks you high ideally, outstanding.
Would choosing "No Information" hurt my candidacy? Choosing "No Information" is not likely to hurt your candidacy. Choosing "Outstanding" under the conditions I mentioned above is likely to help your candidacy. I heard that in America if write on your resume that your health is good, the employer will interpret it as you are dying. Is it the same with the Appraisal Tables? What's the right mix anyway? I guess that if the recommender chooses "Outstanding" in every field, he'll probably be regarded by the adcom as unreliable.
Second, the top schools are looking for top people. They sometimes even try to "convince" the recommender in the instructions to "reduce" or balance the grades so that they can distinguish between candidates.
The fact of the matter is that they want the best of the best, and that being ranked "top" on all fronts except one where you're maybe not exceptional would enhance your candidacy if the recommendation itself and your personal history coincide with these claims. Last question for today, promise chances. If I'm not wrong, you said that HBS views duty service as work experience. These instructions apply to the vast majority, and do not take into account the minority.
Most schools say that, because they're oriented towards the american public, with college coming right after high-school. Some schools mention that if you have high-quality experience before college as opposed to flipping burgers , that would also count.
You may attach a note explaining that your military service was a professional full-time position especially if you were an officer and that therefore you chose to include it in the full time work experience section despite the request to include only post-college experience. In your note you can mention that you thought this may be useful for the admission committee in evaluating your candidacy.
You may suggest to the admission committee to ignore these positions if they deem them irrelevant. Really appreciate you willing to answer questions from 'nudniks' like myself.
One of the fields that HBS asked to fill out in the self-reported transcript was the estimated "Rank in Cass". Could you please comment on the importance of this field? Given that my undergrad institution, the Hebrew U. I'm not even sure whether NOT reporting was an option at all. Could this fact hurt my chances? I will apply schools: Your schedule is tight.
You have less than two weeks until your GMAT. From now until November 8: My gut feel is that the first case may be more relevant for you and for most people. Is it better to write the application essays in Hebrew first and than translate it with professional help, or write it in English from the beginning?
Two issues with the translation option: Most admission officers in fact, everyone I spoke with feel that it's not ethical to do this. Your admission chances are likely to be higher if the langauge is authentic, i. One of the UCLA's essays is: The most significant leadership role that I have been taking is establishment and management of a volunteering project in my work that includes 50 people.
Is it good enough even though the volunteering project is not my everyday work? The short answer is: Definitely a strong story that will give you points on leadership, community contribution, initiative and other admission drivers. If you have an alternative story that will give you more "points" on the admission drivers, then you may be better off going with the other story. If your essay plan how you distribute your stories between the different essays is such that it will be better to put the volunteer story somewhere else achievement essay, for example so that you can put here another story that fits here but doesn't fit anywhere else, then you may be better off going with the other story.
Hope this long answer wasn't confusing I have some volunteering background in the university worked with a sick child in a broken home, worked in a nursing home but not in recent years.
Alot of extracurricular backgraound personal trainer on the side, writing articles to semi proffesional websites in a multitude of areas, and going now to start a company of my own in the area of nutritional supplements. I did full military service, regular combat position, finished as sargeant with good reccomendations.
I am in the process of deciding on my ways in the next years of my life, and need some information to know if I should make some tactical decisions that will help me to be accepted to Stanford in I will be 32 then, and don't mind the younger crowd , as a given I am assuming my current entrepreneuring will not make me a millioner.
I do not want to be seen as manipulative and using adversities I've been through as a crutch or leverage, but if that is how its supposed to be and I am entitled to it all fairness, than it may help balance out my poor GPA. The facts that you will provide about the ADD and the family situation are likely to alleviate some of the concerns regarding your academic achievements. A strong GMAT is likely to further alleviate these concerns.
To what extent will the ADD and family issues alleviate these concerns? This depends on the exact facts which you will present and the exact text which you will use. A strong presentation of strong mitigating circumstances is likely to help but is not likely to bring you to the equivalent of graduating with distinction. Is there any point re: G I can shoot for but is there any real benefit going over which I can get with a lesser effort or any other number? I believe that, under your circumstances, a is likely to have more impact than a Will this make a strategic difference?
I am using this time to find out about MBA, and maybe start my own business from home or study something, is that adversity of any siginifcant importance to the good side or the bad? I believe that this situation is likely to somewhat hinder your candidacy. A strong presentation of the mitigating circumstances injury is likely to help. However, working as an employee, or independently and accumulating work-related or leadership-related achievements would probably have been better for your candidacy.
I am right now in california, is there any point going over to stanford and asking for somekind of counceling? Visiting campus may help your candidacy, assuming that, as you said, you don't creat a negative impression. Basically all of my questions come down to this: CAN I offset that? Anything that you can do to advance any of the admission criteria mentioned here: BTW I am a good friend of M. Pinto who was admitted to stanford this year with your help.
Please send him "drishat shalom hama". In terms of admission chances , the rank is class in probably the most important data point concerning your GPA. The identity of the school, the field of study and the absolute grade e. But the lower your GPA, the stronger you'll need to be on the leadership side. If these issues do not reduce the reader's ability to understand the content, and if these issues are mostly in the essays - then these issues are not likely to reduce your admission chances.
Oh, you should have seen my HBS essays. But even when I read them today, after all the theory, research and principles we developed at aringo, they still seem great on the content side. I believe that the content is what matters most. Hope this will help you have a more relaxed weekend However, before I do so, I need all the information I can get about the two question I deem as most important:. Will it be perceived as an advantage over graduates of Israeli MBA programs? Thank you for the thorough review of the Ivey program.
It really helps me put things in the right perspective I was referring to Rotterdam. Rotterdam is one of Europe's 10 leading program in fact, top-7 usually. Their strengths are in Consulting and Technology and Finance to a lesser extent. Depends very much on geography.
If you don't speak Dutch, you're still probably more likely to find a position in the Netherlands than in the rest of Europe. It will probably make it a bit harder for you to attain a strong position in Europe, but it will still be possible and attainable. How many Israelis got an interview invitation from HBS so far? This decision mostly depends on staffing and availability considerations. If your interview is with a Boston-based person, consider flying there for the interview.
I flew to Boston for the interview they suggested that I do this on the phone. In retrospect I feel that it was a good decision. We can only hope the numbers keep rising. I'm seeking for advice. I graduated college in cum laude and worked in research in new york since then. I took the GMAT earlier this year, almost without studying and got a low grade. It's definitely possible to prepare a quality application if your plan is to sumit the applications in March the last round, which is usually "hardest".
If you plan to submit in January - it is very likely that there will be a substantial "price" in terms of application quality. We specialize in MBA programs. I am less familiar with other programs. If the GMAT is below and there are no special medical circumstances, the chances to be accepted to a top program are very low. It is considered as part-time work experience and it could somewhat promote your candidacy, especially if you had an opportunity to excercise and demonstrate leadership skills.
Did you meet with or heard from Israelis attending Cass at the moment, if so what was your inpression with their prospective placement chances? Lately I've been reading your massages in this forum and I learn a lot from them - thanks for that, I knwo you have limited time. I wanted to ask about 3rd round Vs. What do you think are my chances in general and more specifically for 3rd round? If you're asking if it affects chances - usually not. If you're asking if it affects the interview invitation release date - as far as I know, occasionally it does not always, not systematically.
What are the chances of geeting into LBS on 3rd round in general? Acceptance chances in 3rd round are the same as 1st and 2nd in LBS. Second, when you say the same chances do you also mean the same in terms of the quantity of people per round getting accepted? Therefore, if we look at attaining an MBA degree in a top school, we can't simply ignore the fact that the tuition requires a trmendous expense, and almost surely some sort of financing.
It basically gives us the number of years after the investment has been made that it would take us to cover the original expense made. Now, there are several websites that perform this calculation for you, taking into account the lost salary for te years your studying full-time without making any money, and also the average rate of salary growth post-graduation apparently, you should expect a 4.
Be advised that you still have to make some critical assumptions, but this is a good precursor to the time it would take you to repay your MBA tuition. The good news is that my calculations were exaggerated, mainly by accounting for living expenses on one hand, and not acounting for annual growth in salary post-graduation on the other hand. In any case, Forbes's calculator estimates 2. I applied to several schools last year. My Gmat score was I have quite good background.
I was accepted by NYU and Cornell. I was rejected from Harvard, Kellogg and Columbia. I made the Gmat again and got Do you think that I have a chance to apply again to Harvard, Kellogg or Columbia as reapplicant.
In that case, it does sound like re-applying is not out of the question in terms of chances especially at Columbia and Kellogg, but also at HBS. Dalit answered this one well! I would add a slight tweak my opinion: I was on Dean's list for 3 years of my degree. On the army, I was an officer in one of the technology units in the Air Force.
I was working as a software engineer for 2 years and now I am working as a buyer in IBM. As far as i can tell, they prefer science educated applicants i am an EE , we were three out of EE school at TAU and all of us got to the Case study round.
They are pretty keen on MBA studies. I assume that you are applying in the second round. I believe that at NYU you will be somewhere between competitive and stretch, closer to stretch. Two things to keep in mind: At NYU, focus on and commitment to the school often help a lot. Consider re-taking the GMAT exam if this was your first one. I don't know if you were at the Kellogg presentation 10 days ago at Reichman, but in any case, if you have anymore questions about Kellogg, let me know and I'll be happy to answer.
Everyone else - if you have questions about Kellogg or the application process in general, of course don't hesitate to ask!!! We have a chat just for that here in mba chances , so let me know about any questions and I'll be happy to get back to you. Not enough room to write how much I envy you for starting school in NYC this year. My primary plans are London, but I am also looking at Columbia.
I was wondering if you can give me an estimate about the chances in regular decision compared with the early decision. Regardless of the school you choose, I highly recommend that you interview - it would only help your chances of getting in and would demonstrate your commitment to the school. My full answer would be quite a long one as I have been gathering material on both schools for over 3 years now. In a nutshell, these are quite different schools conceptually and even physically speaking.
I find the IT life too dynamic, so to speak, and my expectations from an MBA is mainly to acquire tools and networking to allow such a transition.
Does anyone know from which school s one has the best chances of getting into these fields of course, the school s may change from one field to the other? I understood that rechecking takes up to 3 weeks. I already applied to London Business School and waiting for R2 intereview decisions, so I will not have time to get rechecked scores delivered on time. Gilam, I would like to know how do you assess my chances to apply successfully to Harvard full time MBA program for the class that begins in september My GMAT score is 49 - m, 42 - v I was on the dean's list for two years and finished with a 93 average.
I work for a consulting firm for two years and as an assistant teacher at TAU from which I graduated. Besides that I am the Chairman of the "Peres center for peace" young leaders team for the last year. The Peres activity will help. I am considering an MBA abroad, preferably US, and would be more than happy to get your estimation regarding my case and chances.
I am about 29 years old. My average is about Teudat Horaa Experience Summery: Full time position during learning towards AD. Design of a variety of products and boards. My managerial experience is mostly as project manager of the products I have designed. It includes work with subcontractors, purchasing etc. As an Application Eng. I also have participated as tech. I have proposed to develop an innovative product that probably would help our company to expose itself internationally.
After presenting the concept to some of our customers and getting a positive feedback it was decided to go for it, and I would manage its development. I know that my major weakness is a low average during my study.
Do you think my experience and good GMAT score will enable me to overcome this weakness? On the other hand, can my education minor at technology education be a pro in terms of student diversification? Is it a problem? If yes, can I overcome this issue by explaining that the firing had made a positive impact on my grades?
I have received 89 for my graduation project due to the fact that I have had enough time to prepare it. Hope it is enough for an initial estimation J Thank You in advance. Gilam is the owner of Aringo, but the IIMBA is a student run now graduates organization that is aimed at helping Israeli applicants, current students and graduates http: Mba chances - is a joint venture between the above two groups, Gilam commited to remain impartial which I think he is and we monitor the forum and answer questions, in addition to opening new chats.
Yes, a good GMAT score will help balance the GPA issue since both of these scores fall under the same admission driver analytical skills. The explanation regarding working while studying is also likely to help a bit in alleviating the GPA concern. Your technology education focus is likely to help - first because both education and technology are relatively appealing areas for admission committees and second because the combination is unique. The fact that your grades went up will help alleviate the analytical skills concern the the GPA will probably raise but is not likely to alleviate the concerns that the firing may raise these concerns are likely to fall under a different category of admission drivers - track record of success, teamwork skills, communication skills, etc.
It will be good to check regarding each university whether you have to provide the reason for leaving each position. If you ethically have to provide the reason for leaving, then what is likely to help is a recommendation letter from the person who fired you saying how great you did on this job and what were the external circumstances that led to the firing.
What is also likely to help is being fact-based and as objective as possible in describing the circumstances. Also, possibly being self-critical and saying what you have learned and how you developed from this. Am I telling you this to brag? You can read more about ranges of GMAT scores here: I am not sure about the numbers but I know that quite a few of my class mates got jobs in consulting through the milkround this how the period in which all consulting firms and bank come to campus to recruit.
There are two issues to consider:. London is the most competitive office. The chances will grow if you apply to another office. And this is the important point Consulting firms are hiring significantly less for summer than to full time. Of course, if you work there in the summer it will make the full time recruiting easier, but if not - it is still very doable! Check the full time stats in order to compare.
We thought it will take him about 6 month to find a job. He got his offer on the last day of my first term 3. The difficulties are in writing a proper CV, and the recruiting process that is much much longer than that we are used to in Israel he got the offer from the first company he intervied with. I will be grateful to get your assistance with estimating my chances of being accepted and getting a scholarship if possible for the following universities:.
For the last year I have been working as a software engineer in a global high tech company. Also, for the last few years I am involved with numerous volunteering activities. At Stanford and Harvard you'll be between competitive and stretch. If so, your English probably improved significantly since you last took the test.
I also assume that the verbal score wasn't "perfect" the first time around. Under these assumptions, it's probably a good idea to re-take the test unless there are other circumstances which could change the picture here.
Your age is not likely to be a significant concern in most programs. It may be a small concern in some of the programs - less so in Europe. Nop, Don't have any idea. If I get to talk to him I'd update him about your question.. They usually say these requests aren't granted, but I've heard that the chances aren't that low.
To clarify the "rules of the game" for this thread -. I answer questions every Monday. We use the following terminology for chances evaluation: It will be hard for you to get in. It is probably not impossible. Israel is a small place - MBA is great for international business but if you expect to recoup your investment by working in Israel then you are so wrong — better to attend TUA evening MBA. It is better to apply with more experience. After the staj you will have lots to say in your application.
I would say that if you have patience, wait and gain more experience. If not you still have great chances at this time. Working hard while doing the application is not easy but if you are motivated it solves the problem. As a person with a background at engineering and with four year experience at Intel, Stanford was my natural choice. I think that I will do some more reaserch regarding my chances before letting go.
Research about the school, not about chances Worse that can happen is you spend time writing the application which was a fun process itself Best that can happen is you get in and get a chace to spend 2 truly amazing years here. My point was that if you dont apply, your admission chances drop to zero.
I am not discouraging any research, i just think that the research should be around the school and why is it the best fit for you if it really is. From your note I understand that finding a job in the US, let's say for ex. I know that even in Israel it's possible but the chances are near to zero. T he streets of London are paved with gold, or so the saying goes; and this year MBA graduates from across Europe are hoping to find their fortunes in the city.
It is a similar deal for graduates from Iese Business School in Barcelona. According to Alex Herrera, director of career services at Iese: Across the European investment banking industry, MBA recruitment is up significantly, says Alison Trauttmansdorff, head of graduate recruitment for Europe at Goldman Sachs.
Thiri Mon is one of hundreds of graduates who have been attracted to the City. She is now considering a job offer from Morgan Stanley to work in fixed income securitisation. She was offered the job following her summer internship with the firm, which she and many of her fellow LBS students viewed with trepidation. Post-MBA is one of the few chances you get to change careers. I want to be challenged. Although Ms Mon has not approached any other City firms since her internship, she says several of those she considered for an internship position last summer have approached her again this summer with a view to hiring her.
Columbia Business School in New York reports London is also popular with its students — it is the second largest city in terms of alumni for the school. A recent consulting forum at the school was attended by 22 firms — from the likes of McKinsey to the boutiques and niche players, she says.
At the Fuqua school at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina, it is a similar story, says Sheryle Dirks, assistant dean for the daytime programme and director of the career management centre.
This means that the management consultancy is recruiting more MBAs these days than in the recruiting heyday of Overall, the news is loud and clear. The demand for MBAs is back with a vengeance. Students from the top schools once again have the luxury of turning down a job.
In Europe there have been similar increases. Even better news for new graduates is the greater range of jobs on offer. While the finance sector and management consulting have re-established themselves as the dominant recruiters for MBAs, there is a growing interest from other industry sectors. It is a segmentation that is both functional and geographical. The traditional focus on US and European companies is also changing. Insead, which has campuses in France and Singapore, says 25 per cent of its students now find their first job in the Asia-Pacific region.
Recruitment by Indian companies is particularly strong. However, for many students the salaries paid by Indian companies still do not match those paid by European or US companies, says Dora Bose, who is leaving Insead in Fontainebleau this summer to work for Standard Chartered Bank in Mumbai. When she was looking for a job, she says, her priority was to work in the banking sector in Europe or Asia and to get a job with international exposure.
Standard Chartered offered her a job in consumer banking, which she was particularly interested in, and a competitive package to boot. During the dotcom boom, MBAs often chased unrealistic dreams. Are you applying to the same schools that rejected you last time or are you adding new schools to your list? Are you only applying to them this time because you believe your chances as a re-applicant are low to all the schools you would prefer? Also, I work with very influential clients many of whom will recommend me.
Who should I approach for recommendations? Can I use the same ones for different Universities? Thanks a lot, Osnat. Dear Gilam, I wanted to ask for your expertise in 2 matters: NYU's first deadline was December 1 in previous years.
My impression is that the difference in chances between the first round and the second round at NYU is relatively small but is not zero. It's probably better to submit the application in the first round if you can create a quality application by then. Yes, you can use the same recommender for different universities.
Normally, this is the most effective approach - pick the recommender who is likely to provide the best recommendation in terms of admission chances and use this recommender for all schools. First, that the "best recommendation" is not only measured by content but is also measured by who the recommender is preferably, a senior person, preferably a person who supervised your work directly preferred or indirectely, preferably a person who knows you closely, etc.
See additional details on recommender selection at http: Second, that some universities have recommender requirements which are unique like, professor, or peer, or 3 recommenders instead of the usual 2, etc.
Therefore, it's important to read the updated, specific recommender requirements of each school. I'm a 2nd year student at Columbia and will love to help you with the process. I would like to know where can I get more information about expertise of each school? I work in the defense industry for the past five years. I volunteered for the "Atidim program" as marketing representative for two years. Yair, go to http: In any case I agree that once you are "in", most schools will be at least a little flexible with this point.
After all, they decided they want you, and offered you a place in their class. Additionally, because you are applying in the first round, giving you a little extra time should not affect the wait list, so I really see no reason for them to give you a problem.
I would imagine this is true for most schools except for maybe those schools who are known to be stricter about other things as well Harvard. I wonder if anyone could be of assistance with inquiries regarding the Sloan 1-year program at Stanford. In addition, I'd like to asses my true chances of getting in. I only have time to apply first round to HBS and Columbia.
I do not have time to submit to ED in Columbia nor to any other program's first round. So, what is worse, in terms of my admission acceptance chances: My tendency is to wait another year and apply all to first round.
But then again, by next year I will already have 31, wich means I will start at almost To any of you who knows how many Israelis got accepted last year on the first round and how many in the second round to the following schools, please provide the information. I refer to the following Business schools:. For the meantime we are still at the holly land Personally I prefer NY your home town, no? Can you please asses my chances to the leading MBA programs in the U.
Bsc in Electrical Engineering avg. Tuck early action round. Now what about other universities results, I will not have them by that date. Therefore I have two questions: If I am not depositing the money by Jan 5th do I loose my place and I will not be considered on their next round results? This is their policy. In that case should I apply on their first round November 30 round?
If you know you will not want to pay this amount until Jan. Harvard will be a stretch. Interview invites then pick up steam and crest in period fr. Nov 15th-Dec 8 or so; some interview invites are by city, typically New York in mid Dec, etc. IF you follow an HBS interview thread, you can usually find out when your city hits. Sometimes HBS tells you to come to Boston for interview--not sure why in many cases, but those interviews can happen out of city order. In some cases, they really want to test your English or app.
If you get city interview, or phone interview often in distant city or International far away place you can request to come to Boston or find out city interview and take it there. IF you aint got an interview invite by Dec. You can also have an invite to interview on Decision Day super rare. They do not arrange interviws in alphabetical order!!!!!! Or anything else, except list of accepted kids in their own files: And i have been volunteering at ruah tova 2 years.
For the past 3 years i have been working in the finance area. And a year ago i was pulled to a big investment bank in Israel, i manage 2 people allot for my age 24 in this industry. Should i delay my app and get more post B. And what are my chances at the top 20 programs? I just discussed a very similar situation with the head of the admission committee of a top-5 school on Friday, so I can share some updated impressions However, the fact that it's what they call "during college" reduces the effectiveness a bit.
If you think that the position you will hold assuming you delay your application by another year will be significantly stronger in title, in amount of people managed than your current position, it may make sense to wait a year. Can you please estimate my chances to attend the followings school's,and what can i do to improve my chances:.
I am still at the very beggining of the procidure so i don't have a GMAT yet but i guess it will be around , my psychometric score is At the moment i work in the Hedge fund industry as an economist for a couple of months. If it's of any relevance, i were born in Russia and imigrated to israel in You can read a little more about it at http: We have MAP projects in high-tech a few are even local.
I did one in Santa Clara that ended up being a local one because the company didn't have money to fly us out there But I wouldn't worry about that as the MAP was built to accommodate learning in the most supportive atmosphere and there's no better opportunity to get out of your comfort zone than choosing a project in a field you have no experience in.
To read more about the MAP program go to http: Ilia, in my evaluation I will assume you are a male if you were female, your admission chances would have probably been higher.
Thank you for the valuable information on this forum. I took the GMAT twice while working full time in a demanding position in New York and did not have much time to study.
Based only on the information provided, and assuming strong essays and recommendations, I believe that each of the 5 schools you have mentioned will be a stretch in this case.
For Harvard, Stanford - yes. For Columbia - probably yes, though it's best to present the whole case to them and see if you "get lucky" in your specific circumstances. For NYU - probably yes, but with lower probability than the above schools. The question is whether you can convince them that your situation is equivalent to this will be hard I appreciate your feedback. According to that scenario, I'll start my MBA at the age of 33 and end it at There is, of course, also the risk of not being admitted which exists in all cases.
I am not sure this is true. The fee for 1 year may be higher depends on the program but the overall I investment is likely to be lower. As I mentioned above, there are a few American programs that may be relevant for you. Also, the option of applying in the third round though the chances are usually lower may be relevant. Please see relevant deadlines from last year we are just about to update this page with this year's low-season deadlines at http: Yes, I do think that the age issue should be a consideration, though the difference between 32 and 33 is small.
If you reach 35 by the time of applying - this is likely to have a bigger impact. I think that the evaluation that I gave you in August still holds in this regard. I would appreciate if you could estimate the chances for me to get accepted to one of the following programs: I am 26 years old. I have served in the army for 6 years. I was in charge of 20 people on a daily basis and up to 80 people on specific situations.
I'm a student on the third and last year of my B. I have received two excellence scholarships in the past two years. During the last year and a half I have been working at Intel as a Finance Analyst daily work with people from Europe and the U.
I expect to receive around on my GMAT my psychometric is In addition to the above, could you estimate the affect that a couple of years working experience in a consulting firm in Israel will have on my application process and chances for getting a scholarship? Overall I think that if we're talking about a company like Shaldor or POC and about a consultant rather than manager position, the contribution to your candidacy will be low.
I hope all is well. I'm Argentinean orginally, raised in Israel and spent the last two years in New York working for a financial services company. My post-graduate experience is only the 2 years in NY, but I worked as a team leader through college and also co-founded a tech start-up. I have a in my GMAT with a high undergrad avg. How do you estimate my chances of acceptance and what do you recommend stressing in the application?
I am not an expert in assessing your chances. That's why Gilam is here in the next thread. In genera stress international experience and exposure diversity is huge in the school , leadership, team work and why you really want to come to LBS.
Let me know if you have more specific questions. I hope you are enjoying this week off, as no decisions or interview invites are being sent out this week. It should give everyone some time to re-charge their batteries and calm down a bit.
Good luck to us all, and may be a year full of good news and great new experiences for us all. The aringo Team Gilam. Id appreciate your response on assessing my admission chances to MBA programs. What are my chances in entering LBS? Could you recommend programs which I would be a likely candidate? For our purposes we'll assume that you're managing people. Nir, I was planning to base our recommendation on a "guess" that you're interested in technology-oriented MBA programs programs focused on management in a high-tech environment but then saw that you mentioned LBS, which is relatively strong in finance.
So, I will mostly base the recommendations on rankings and admission chances. At Cornell you'll probably be between competitive and stretch. LBS is likely to be a stretch a bit towards competitive. Stanford will be a stretch. To clarify the "rules of the game" for this thread: We answer questions every Monday. Stretch To the best of our experience, candidates with similar profiles rarely get accepted to this program.
The result will be greatly influenced by: Profiles of other applicants in the same round, and b. The identity and mood! That is why I applied to four schools that I thought I have chances to be accepted to, and hopefully one would be a success surprise, surprise - that is exactly what happened. MIT is defenitly the most fit for me, because of my background. As far as fit is concerned, I think that I fit in all of them.
The thing that appeals to me the most in european schools is the proximity to Israel. London also is appealing beside the obvious reasons, my partner will get an automatic work permit.
I also applied to several R2 schools. I don't know what to do about those now. MIT wanted an answer until the middle of March. I'm going abroad next week for three weeks, so I will have plenty of time to think about it. Congratulations to all the new MIT admits and especially to you, Shimon! I bet you all deserve this. Shimon, I know the long way you've made up to this point and I'm so happy for you! Some rest, at last I finished Law and International affairs in Hebrew U with Chances of application with this data: Recently people asked me about the resources they should use while trying to gather information on MBA in general and on specific schools.
Here are some resources I found useful: I must first join all congratulations for how wonderful and useful this site is. I actually already initiated contact with aringo and looking forward towards my first appointment. But, I kinda wanted to get your general impression of my candidacy before I begin.
I'm thinking about Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Tuck, Duke, Berkley or Ross but basically others among top 10 and 20 are also an option. Can you tell what my chances are? Should I be aiming towards different programs where I might have better chances? Just got a R2 interview invite from LBS!! My impression that you'll be competitive-to-stretch at Harvard and Stanford.
So, looks like you have a fairly well-diversified and balanced list of schools here. We met in her office for 1. There might be a lesson here-- if you and the interviewer are both Israeli, it might be a good idea to insist on speaking English for the entire interview, just to impress the interviewer.
We spent an hour talking about my work experience. She didn't have a background in my industry pharmaceuticals but we spoke a lot about cultural differences in Israeli culture as it relates to the workplace. She was fairly balanced about whether doing an overseas MBA is worth it. The consistent message was that you will need to work in Europe or the U.
I had heard these questions from other members here in the MBA Chances forum, so I had already tried to cover these questions in my casual discussion with the interviewer. At the end of the interview she asked me to let her know if I decide to study at INSEAD which is always a good sign that the interview went well. After the interview I went to the Dizengoff Center. I finished my bachlor degree in economics and acounting in Bar ilan university with a 85 GPA.
I will take the december CPA bar exam. I would like to begin the MBA program in September at one of the top ten schools. During university, i was employed as an personal assitant to vice presidant of marketing in an investment company. I would appreciate it very much if you could estimate my chances on acceptance to the top ten schools.
Harvard and Stanford will be a stretch. I am currently in the "assessment" stage in which I looking for target schools while working on my GMAT my main objective right now is to look for some "married applicants friendly" B-schools. My future wife and I have just started to put into action our "MBA initiative" and I would be thankful for comments from the forum's participants. Our main concern is what happens if we are admitted to different and geographically distant B-schools.
I would like to know if you know of any school that will most likely have a positive, and preferably enthusiastic, approach to a couple that applies to its MBA program? Smaller schools Stanford, Tuck, etc. These schools are particularly concerned about "yield" number admitted vs. If they get the feeling that they can "kill two birds with one stone" they may be more excited to take on the couple.
In what light do admission boards see an applicant that redid his GMAT?
Admission committees care about your academic achievements and often look at your GPA in a "relative" perspective, i. Admission committees abroad put relatively low emphasis on the reputation of the school from which you graduated in Israel, and on the major. As I am about to commence an M. I am about to take the GMAT in 3 months time. I feel obligated to mention that the courses I have taken in my B. Sc were relatively hard and rigorous to explain my good but not excellent average.
I will be most appreciative if you could relate to the following questions:. Is there any chance they would settle for the GMAT? Should I mention this anywhere as a virtue of ambition and stamina? I also have 3 years exp in an international finance firm following my studies. What are the chances for such qualification?
A more general question - is it possible to earn these types of scholarships one which cover at least half the tuition before beginning the studies, or are they always awarded based on the achievements in school. Merit-based scholarships are awarded prior to beginning the MBA as well as sometimes based on academic achievements while taking the program.
Most schools have endowments or funds dedicated to merit-based scholarship purposes, and the amounts are significanly higher at schools that are ranked lower. In general, with a very strong application that adds up to your impressive background and stats you may qualify for a merit-based, post-admission, pre-studies scholarship of half or full tuition. The likelyhood of such scholarships significantly increases as you go "down" the rankings.
However, there are such scholarships rare even in the top-5 schools. Assuming that your background includes some impressive leadership experiences, you should be a competitive at LBS. I am not familiar enough with LSE to give you a good answer about it. It will be best to ask them directly in an e-mail. It is a hard question. There are advantages and disadvantages and I am not sure, based on the information I have, what is the right answer for this one.
More competitive in schools like Berkely, Carnegie Mellon and Austin, but also a relevant candidate for some of the leading schools, assuming that your work experience demonstrates talent and leadership.
And you are anxious to go to business school to be a successful businessperson someday. I think that HBS and Chicago are very generous with scholarships for people with high credentials. I was never in your shoes so take my advice with a few grains of salt, but maybe you should consider taking a year off from Tel-Aviv, and working on your US applications. Schools not only know this, they encourage it. In any case, with regard to the previous posts, are you sure you want to lie about or hide this information in your application?
Again, Caveat Emptor, I'm only going for one MBA so I'm not the best person to seek advice from on this, but maybe you should take a year's break and see where you're headed. I'm an MD that is planing a career change and as i see it, entering an MBA program in one of the leading US schools can give me an oppertunity to do so.
I'm looking for a school that will help me enter the biotech industry. What are my chances? Shay, MD's who clearly state why the need an MBA and lay out a solid career plan have a pretty good case with most admission comittees. Your working experience is lower than the average full-time experience for admitted candidates in leading schools. However, your part time and military experiences might cover for that. I wanted to know if and how should I explain it to the admission committee, and What are my chances of acceptance to an Ivy League schools with that score and a 3.
Some schools may look at your other GMAT scores as well. On behalf of the Chicago GSB, we apologize for the timing, no other time was available. Notice the revised chat rules: Each forum member may post up to 50 messages and replies per chat.
Posts are screened and are uploaded gradually. Therefore, you may see your post only after a while. You may call the admission committee members by their first name some people asked about this. Omer, excellent question - you are, generally, very much right.
How do you evaluate career changers? Therefore, you may see your post only after a while, or may not see it if there is not enough time. I would like to ask you about my chances of getting into the top 5. Well, you are obviously a very smart guy! Thanks for providing detailed data. That helps me give you an informed answer. If you were paid, this is a part time job, otherwise - voluntary community servic. I think that HBS and Standord will be a stretch, but not out of the question.
Hi and thanks for your reply. I don't know why on the phone, I tried to argue that I know Israelis who had a "live" one, but got a negative answer. I'm really frightened for my chances now!!! I'd be happy to talk to you on the phone in the weekend, if that's an option. Please mail me at mkainan cfo-forum. What do you think my chances are regarding the top schools. Includes almost every business aspect of a export factory. Now trying to Establish a china-israel economic forum between Universities.
Funny, I did just that too prior to b-school Depends on so many factors Do you feel like putting more effort into studying for it read the ETS book at night, that's probably most effective? When are you applying?
Good that you provided a lot of data I am still missing a few key elements, though. Duke, Michigan, Cornell will be a little stretch. Hi Gilam, Thanks for your reply. Regarding the Gmat - i took a course which i was the top of the class, and the truth is, i expected a much higher score on Math - the preparation tests i took indicated a much higher score but the truth is i am no professional on tests like this, and would like to avoid retaking the if not necessary.
I think the main focus of my application should be, trying to show my other qualities regarding my experience with establishing and buck and boosting projects the entrepreneur side which I can definitely show with great detail on an application.
I can apply between now and in 2 years the most important thing is to enter a top school after receiving post-graduate work experience, and I could also now decide in which direction my work should be. I will most appreciate your response. And again, Thank you very very much. Keep in mind that most schools like to evaluate the candidate on a multitude of dimensions, including leadership skills, teamwork skills, analytical skills, entrepreneurieal spirit and quite a few more Not sure about this.
It really depends which school. Uh, I wish there would be an easy answer to this In general, "finance" schools seek competent, mature individuals and not necessarily "finance" guys most of their class probably isn't "finance" guys. I'd be very gratefull if you could advice me from your experience.
I know the info I've given is brief, but what do you think? Should I retake the test? Is it a must? I often see candidates like yourself achieving improvements of points without that much effort reading the ETS book at night for a few weeks, for example. You are right to say that you can't afford to hurt the quality of your essays if you want to get into a top 10 school.
It will be hard to juggle the two, I know Thursday, November 20th at If you start the process now, including the GMAT, it is a bit too late for programs starting in Sept.
Yes, you still have time for spring programs, for which you can submit your application in the coming spring. The schedule of such programs is often different, you need to check for each of these programs specifically. I offer such services through aringo. Such services often make a dramatic difference in the application, but they cost You are right to be concerned that sometimes such letters may backfire.
Gwyneth and Al, what can you tell us about improving our chances after submitting the app. Is there a special "Michigan Ad Comm" way of testing the app. The Carnegie Mellon Graduate School of Industrial Administration, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, consistently ranks among the top business schools in the world, including its latest ranking as 6 in the world in by the Wall Street Journal.
I think these Q's purpose is to evaluate the chances of me registering upon admition. If so, How can I tell them that I have registerd to say I believe this is true.
Stern is not likely to reject you because of that. They may put you on the waitlist, to see where your get in and what your plans are. Unfortunately I can't say for sure if telling them will decrease your chances or not. If I remember correctly you are just graduating from college now. In that case, I would say yes.
However, I also remember that you have significant and very impressive employment background during college. Therefore, there will probably be a "significant" improvement of your chances especially if your stated goal is to go into the VC world after b-school , but it is not likely to be a "huge" improvement.
Do you know how many Israeli were admitted in R1? My answer is simple: Other than that, I have 3 excellent recommendations: What do you think are my chances to be accepted? My answer is simple that would be your question, I assume ;-: On the basis of this data alone not knowing your employment background etc.
They may accept someone with a GMAT below , but these will be fairly rare cases. If it is not confidential, I think many of us 2nd rounders would love to hear about your friend's background - to get a feel for our chances if there are any left once the 1st Israeli was accepted As correctly noted by Yaron, MIT does not have a third round. With Stanford, it will probably be harder than in rounds 1 and 2, potentially much harder but not impossible for very strong candidates. You can have a look at upcoming deadlines which are not "hard deadlines" and reasonable to get into: These are deadlines for the coming months with normal chances.
It really should not matter for you. All Israeli alumni who interview are great.. And, your chances won't be affected by this choice.
I am happy to take questions of potential candidates, posted on MBAChances. There is a section for international applicants, I think the site is worth checking. Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships. That's just not the case. I have been working as a finance manager in a global blue chip consumer goods company in London I am an international employee from Israel for the last two years. Unfortunately I am very unhappy and think to move to a smaller outfit here in London not exactly a blue chip, but a more enjoyable and fulfilling environment.
Will they wonder why I left? How can one explain this? Gee, I wonder how's that possible - after all you are so nice to everyone, how come your environment is not enjoyable I would like to get some general idea about my chances in getting to an MBA program in the US with the following:. It would be realy great if you could recommend me where should I apply for an MBA program.
You should definitely attend a class, conduct a campus tour and meet with some students. I will be in LA from the 9th of April. After you send the application maybe even before you should come to an interview as it will greatly increase your chances of being admitted. I agree with you wholeheartedly!
Yet, your chances for a good paying job for an international student are not that great coming out of such a schools eg. McCombs , catch What do most people do? Not that it hasn't crossed my mind but what can one do?
I'll take my chances with a top 10 MBA and hope that the current back wind in the economy will allow me to return to Israel in five years with a small "mashkanta" that can be delt with on a middle managment salary. I am 26 years old married with a child finished army and have some work experiance while in school as a director of a nonprofit zionist international student orgenezation.
I just graduated hebrew university law and international relations a 87 average overall currently doing my law internship. I would like to work durring my studies. The chances of not getting a job after graduating a top business school, and especially with your experience, are slim-to-non. Speaking from my experience at Duke, and bear in mind I graduated in one of the most difficult years for MBAs in terms of recruiting, I haven't had a problem finding a job as an international nor did other international friends.
The US economy is picking up fast and by the time you'll graduate it will be at its peak. Companies are going to fighting over good candidtaes as I heard already happens this year. Non of the Israelis I know who graduated from a top school has returned to Israel, unless they wanted to. Is there a big diffrence between these schools? Assuming that you will have strong essays, I believe that you will be competitive in the last two, HBS and Stanford will be a stretch, and Wharton somewhere in between.
It is most likely that they will treat you as an Israeli because of your background, which is here. It is important that you emphasize your American citizenship.
It could help your chances a bit and maybe more than a bit at Columbia. Yes, but those who don't have American citizenship have to have a job for the other part of their time in order to get the appropriate visa. I am not sure about this, though, I am a very little expert when it comes to visas. Well, it depends what you mean by "as good". It has its advantages and disadvantages. Being able to work means that you can cover some of the costs and that you remain an integral part of the business world throughout your studies.
However, it is probably less fun from the social perspective, and less of a complete "adventure" as the full time program is. I got into Duke Round 3.
I am so excited and want to thank u for your advice on these board and at the Fulbright conference. Are Rd, 3 applicants considered for financial aid in a pool along with Rd 2 and 1 or is it a different pool.
I must admit that this was far from predictable. When I just started off, I was advised to go for the 2 nd ten in the ranking. What I can tell is that my essays were pretty balanced — not overselling, I also had very articulated recommendations.
I also know that my interviewer appreciated my effort in coming to interview on campus she said that about 4 times. I guess they also appreciated the fact that I have had a very clear direction management in hi-tech since I finished the army. Surprisingly, I was dinged from Stanford without even getting an interview.
So, as I said - you can never tell. I have a couple of questions about my admission chances. I was in the army in the intelligence corps for 3. During the army I developed a program that mechanized processes in my department, and this was done out of my official role and in extra hours took more than a year. I have been working in Intel as a software developer non-managerial role.
I expect to remain in this job and in this work level at least until the end of the year. I made an initial screening for MBA schools in which I'm interested, and I'm down to the following Could the program I developed for the army be considered such a service more than a year, no reimbursement, extra hours? Is community service during high-school considered "valid"? Michael, first, thanks for the detailed profile, it helps me give you more informed answers.
Second, well done on an amazing GMAT. You will probably be competitive in all the schools that you mentioned above, with HBS being a stretch special emphasis on extraordinary leadership. Picking 5 out of this list has a lot to do with personal considerations - where do you want to live? I am afraid the answer to both of these questions is "no".
Sure, and much luck. I was waitlisted R2 and wondering if there is anything one can do. I am told they are not good. Any additional information would be great. Their policy is to interview by invitation, yet perhaps a visit there could push towards an interview maybe on the spot? How do you think I should go about doing this? Well, if you network well, push the right buttons and have some luck while you are visiting, a visit could definitely make a significant difference.
Showing enthusiasm, motivation and seriousness of intent to whoever you speak with could be really helpful in terms of your admission chances.
The waitlist game also depends, however, on considerations beyond your control such as yield management and the decisions of accepted candidates. This is the part where you just have to cross your fingers really tightly Thanks, Hila, and much luck in these critical moments. I refer to business schools, of course? Does the score matter a lot?
A TOEFL score of and a GMAT verbal score of 35 or so do raise a small concern about your English, a concern that can be alleviated through the personal interview and that can be countered by other strengths. Well, it all depends on what the change is.
If it's a "better job" leadership, management, experience or a promotion-type switch, the move will actually enhance your admission chances , and vice versa. If the reason for leaving is "got a better offer" and you can bring a strong recommendation from your current workplace, you should be OK. If the reason for leaving is not as exciting e. The fact that you switched jobs after one year in this young age is usually, in and of itself, a pretty small concern.
If you provide strong rational for the move, there will likely not be any concern at all. First, thank you Dan, Kassifo and egeg for helping out with the last few questions. You guys give me a feeling that with all this mutual help, maybe it's time for me to retire!
These are what I see as the 3 main factors: Fit of the school's stregths with your area of interest marketing? Other factors include the school's culture grade non-disclosure? I am working in one of the world biggest accounting firms but I was thinking trying to work abroad after finishing my pr a ctice and getting my CPA. Yedidi, it depends where you leave to - which firm, what position, which location. In general, leaving your job after 2 years if I remember correctly, that's the CPA internship, right?
I'm standing in the middle of the process of choosing my prefered programs. I don't know yet what I really want to do after graduation and I probably won't know until I'll start the MBA and so I want to keep all the options.
What do you think? First, many thanks go to Assaf for helping out and giving you an excellent answer. I think that you will be able to get pretty good finance education at Kellogg if you interest is in general management or in business in general.
If you were focused on, say investment banking, I would have said you are better off going to a finance-focused school. Since it sounds like your interest is not particularly finance, I think that Kellogg can cover the finance angel well enough for you. Sloan , so the "big university names" work particularly well.
Second, Which schools do you think ensure their graduates the maximum possible option without hurting the chances? I finished my service as a lieutenant. There are 2 patents on stem cells duplication methods that are pending to register under my name.
I am determined to establish my own biotech company that will use stem cells tech. Well, first, Kol Hakavod Keren on your amazing achievements! The problem is that I never worked in a "real job". I worked only in research although for the last 2. W and S will probably be more welcoming than HBS in that regard.
Let me assume a strong application, one that effectively identifies and reflects your leadership potential. One that touches the right buttons at Stanford, those touchy-feely guys, and that lays out a realistic and exciting future plan.
HBS will be a bit harder because their focus on leadership is extremely strong. You will need a bit more magic there. In order to have a more accurate assessment for HBS, I need to go deeper into your data and see what can be extracted on the leadership side. Some people consider it as a problematic constraint. You should also consider that once you show the school that you have some external funding, your chances to get any non-merit financial support cease to exist.
When you arrive to the US with J, your wife needs to apply for a work permit that takes about 3 months. Then, she can work anywhere. Finally, your wife can also try to find work without a permit and hope that someone will sponsor her H visa H, unlike J, is employer specific. It's obviously harder to find such an employer. First, thanks for your help here, looking at your answers really gave me a lot of helpful information.
Just a few details about me: I am not sure. Based on what I saw in previous years, the likelyhood of a scholarship increases as you go down the rankings. Ron, if you come back right after the MBA I think there will be a significant advantage, though it will not be as significant as for someone coming with experience.
You hear people saying things like "there is no IB industry in Israel" i. Impressive stuff you got there, especially on the work experience side. I think that US business schools at least top 20 or so require the completion of a B.
Some programs admit people straight from undergraduate or with little post-B. I'm no expert and certainly don't know your entire story but I think that in general it's better to complete the B. This would increase your chances of being admitted but more than that it is said to increase the value of your learning period. Is it advisable to apply in the first admissions round vs. Focus on readiness rather than trying to game the system. We receive fewer applications in Round One, so we have more time to evaluate the application, and you get a decision before the holidays.
We also have the wait-list in Round One that we use actively to gauge the pool. In Round Two, the class begins to fill, and if a candidate is placed on the wait-list, the chances to being admitted from the list decline. Is there a corelation between the "psycometric exam" israel mark and the gmat?
I am no expert on the GMAT so please take my answer with a grain of salt. My impression is that there is a pretty close correlation in most cases. I think that most GMAT schools will tell you otherwise, and they probably know better than me. This is my impression.
Well, yes, this is how it works. However, because of the desire to diversify the class, your competition is, to some extent, with other Israelis. The admission committee will try to accept at least a couple of Israelis in any case. How will my university GPA be converted to the 4. Sometimes you will get specific conversion instructions by the school. Sorry I don't have a better answer on this for now - an area we should do more research on.
I will finish my university studies at the summer of Do you think this will be sufficient or should i wait for a few more years? That depends on where you are applying and what are your credentials - military experience, grades, achievements at work, your age, GMAT, essay quality In some cases, your chances will be significantly higher after a couple years of strong full-time work experience, but in other cases your chances may actually be high, or even higher, if you apply immediately this was my personal case, I think.
Does army service as an officer serve as some kind of employment experience worth mentioning or counting on as a job experience? This is a few years of full time, valuable work experience, especially if you had an opportunity to practice leadership and teamwork.
It depends on your personal schedule. If you're emloyed full-time - in order to be ready in July, I think you should start studying in April. My name is Uri, and I've been doing a lot of reading on this site, so I figured it's about time I start writing. I graduated from the Technion with an 85 avg. I also worked in Teva during the first degree as a technical writer in their manufacturing plant. I now work as a software engineer in a small firm in Tel-Aviv.
In the army, I was a shift supervisor in Intelligence in charge of up to 20 people per shift. I am thinking of applying to some B-schools, so I naturally have a few questions:. What schools are considered best for people with an engineering background like myself, who wish to combine the MBA with their technological expertise?
If I seek a career change mainly toward finance , will my engineering background have any negative effect? This question rightfully bothers you! Going a step back you should be really focused at what you want to do after grad because all the schools can land you a good job, where and in which industry this is a different question.
If you want to go international try to get an international brand name Yale, NYU work very well. My best advice would be: Another very important factor is success rate at summer placement- if you get a job in the summer this increases your chances for FT job tenfold.
Did you visit NYC already or not? Did you visit only Columbia or also NYU? Uri, among the leading schools that put strong emphasis on management in a technology-oriented company with emphasis on information technology rather than biotechnology or aerospace or energy technology etc. This is the main strength of these schools with MIT also being strong in entrepreneurship. This depends a lot on how you present this backgroud and what finance position you target.
If you are able to show that your background is very applicable and relevant for succeeding in the targeted position relevant skills, relevant experience it could even be a plus. The best thing, and probably the hardest, is to do your research, exploration and deliberation and come up with a focused plan of what you want to do.
Go through an internal process that brings you to a point where you have an hypothesis of where you want to go you can change this plan at any point in time. In terms of admission effectiveness, my cumulative experience and that's just my subjective understanding is that you want to present the same plan, your own, personal, well-thought-of plan, to all the schools you are applying to.
I have a high GMAT score , well done! In general, in light of your above professional experience, I believe this will not be a significant disadvantage. If one thing I leard from the application process is that Israelis should help each other. I will publish my notes later Didn't have time , there is an amazing Lord of the Ring exhibition at Boston museum of science. There is a link to the chat in the top left corner.
Assaf Wand, second year student Mr. Moshe Sarfaty, first year student. See, is they are expecting applicants this year , and only applied at R1 - that means that !
I know they only interview between to However , again if Wharton and Stanford numbers are close , that means that only people submitted their application to Stanford, so R1 chances are higher. I actually think there is a good chance to find a software job here, especially if you have a US work permit. We don't have a lot of information about it in Darden because essentially most of the recruiting going on in the school is for the big established companies located out of Cville.
There are many more opportunities in north VA near Washington, about 1. North VA is considered to be a very high-tech oriented area with many small and medium tech. They have many programs with these companies. You can also "google" VC funds in Cville and Richmond area, go to their websites, click on their portfolio companies, and most of the chances that those companies are located in the area as VC is a local business.
There is also a website: I know that's very hard to get in that program. Will you graduate with distinction? Need-based scholarships are usually not granted to foreign citizens. Your strengths as a candidate depend on a variety of criteria. You can see a basic layout of these criteria at: The lower the ranking, the higher usually the chances for scholarship.
As you go up towards 15, 10 etc. The chances at top-5 places are probably low - but still this is not impossible.
Work experience and leadership are definitely things to work on in the coming years in that context. You do not need the work experience to be business experience. Stanford - I'm in the same status as you for online app. Since you're the only Israeli I know who was interviewed and they most probably will admit Israelies in R1 you stand good chances. Only 50 days to wait now: Best I can do is tell you about my interview - basically it was in Israel, the interviewer was an Israeli alumni who had finished 2 years ago.
Do your research before showing up! Now for the bad news - yes, there is a presentation. I was asked to discuss the effect of China's growing economic strength with regards to worldwide reaction. Since I'm from an IT background, I had no idea what to say and stammered throughout that part. I am a very good presenter, and this was probably the worst presentation I ever gave in my life although I did make 1 or 2 important points.
I explained this to him and he understood that I am confident enough to speak about something I know nothing about. You will also be put in a team when you're studying here and will have enough chances to work on your team dynamics, so I don't know who told you about that being in the interview, but I don't think it's reasonable to assume you will be tested on that.
It just doesn't seem like a very reasonable thing to do in an interview. I'll be in Israel in December if you want to find out more -. I've a friend that made that good money every month doing the idea. My reward was seeing the view from the very best.
